Kombucha: A Refreshing Summer Favourite

It’s hot here in London! ?? A perfect time to share one of my favourite summer drinks — Kombucha. I especially love the ginger-flavoured ones, like this @karma.kombucha organic ginger brew (based in Brittany, where I’m from — no affiliation!).

What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented tea drink made by combining black or green tea, sugar, and a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast — known as a SCOBY. It’s naturally rich in probiotics and antioxidants.

While it starts with sugar, the fermentation process significantly reduces the sugar content as the SCOBY consumes it. So the end result is typically a low-sugar beverage.

Can I Make My Own?

Yes! It’s actually easy to make at home. We sometimes brew our own. Since the SCOBY grows and multiplies, you can often get one from a friend or someone local. A great website to buy one is @officialhappykombucha.

Of course, life gets busy, and it’s great to know that shop-bought options are convenient and reliable.

A Healthier Alternative to Coke?

There’s nothing wrong with having a Coke now and then — but many of my clients find that trying kombucha (or water kefir) is a satisfying and refreshing alternative. It’s not just the taste — the added probiotics and antioxidants offer real benefits for gut health too.

It’s also a fantastic alternative to alcohol. I like to serve mine in a wine glass — it really does the trick! ??

Note: Kombucha contains a small amount of caffeine. If you're sensitive to caffeine, especially in the evening, you might prefer water kefir instead.

Thank you to my daughter for editing this video for me — not bad at all for a 12-year-old! ????

What About You?

Have you tried kombucha? Do you have a favourite brand or make your own at home? I’d love to hear about it!
